Hello, people who still follow this blog even though I haven’t posted anything new in over a year. Thank you for remaining steadfast and true and for not unsubscribing (or maybe you simply forgot you ever subscribed in the first place??). Either way, I’d like to share with you a short story I wrote that was published in the New York Times this week.
A really short story.
A tiny story, in fact.
The New York Times accepts submissions of 100 word stories for their Tiny Love column (part of their Modern Love section) and I’m thrilled to share that they published mine, entitled “I Know Which” in the online version of the newspaper on Tuesday, July 12 (click link above to read). One thing I learned from the experience of editing this piece is that it’s REALLY HARD to tell a good story in 100 words or less.
But wait, there’s more! The Tiny Love editor later included my story in the print version of the newspaper on Monday July 18 in the Spotlight section on page 3! We don’t have access to the US version of the NYT here in London so we were alerted to the news by an old colleague of Phil’s in New York who opened his morning newspaper and saw a familiar face staring out at him.
It wasn’t long before friends and family began to text that they’d seen my story too and my sister Miryam (here visiting with her kids) and I went full throttle working our contacts to see who in NY might buy a few copies to keep for me.
Thanks to everyone who came through on this, especially my mother in law who’d already put two copies in the mail before I could stop her. I’ll now be able to wallpaper my entire house with the Monday, July 18 edition of the NYT.
I hope you enjoy it!
Thanks again for sticking around, I’ll do better when it comes to sharing my writing here 🙂
XOXO, Gila
